Avni Lakhera had to rely on a wheelchair after being injured in a car accident in 2012, but after becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympic Games on Monday, she feels as if she is on top of the world. Avni focused only one shot at a time and won the gold medal by finishing first in the women’s R-2 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1.

This is also India’s first medal in the shooting competition of these games. This is also the country’s first gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. Avani is the third Indian woman to win a medal at the Paralympic Games. He said, ‘I am very happy that I made my contribution. Hopefully we will win more medals in future.

After foraying into shooting six years ago, he never looked back and thoroughly enjoyed the sport. She said, ‘When I pick up a rifle, I feel a sense of belonging in it. I feel connected to him. You have to maintain concentration and consistency in shooting and that’s what I like.

When asked about joining shooting, Avni said, “It was in the summer vacations of 2015, when my father took me to the shooting range. I took a few shots and they hit the target. I started it as a hobby and here I am today.

Avni Lakhera will also participate in Mixed 10m Air Rifle Prone SH1, Women’s 50m Rifle Three Position SH1 and Mixed 50m Rifle Prone.

The SH1 rifle class includes those shooters who can hold a gun with their hands, but have deformities in their feet. Some of these athletes compete while sitting on a wheelchair, while some compete standing up.
