Diamond merchant Mehul choksi, involved in Punjab National Bank fraud case, has finally been arrested from Dominica on Tuesday. Sources say that he was caught in Dominica while he was trying to flee to Cuba.
He has recently been missing when he fled from Antigua and Barbuda. CBI has already been trying to extradite him when the news of his disappearance came. He was involved in the 14,000 crore fraud of one of the India’s largest state-owned banks.
Mehul Choksi is in the custody of authorities of Dominica. The prime minister Browne said that Choksi also has two cases filed against him in the court of Antigua: extradition and revocation of citizenship.
The PM Browne has shared that possibly Choksi should be repatriated to India within next 48 hours. He said that they are coordinating with Dominican and Indian government to make sure that Mr Choksi gets deported from Dominica to India without having him back to Antigua first because he has legal protections there.
He mentioned that assuming that there are no legal impediments, he believes Choksi should be sent to India within 48 hours.
Mehul Choksi fled India weeks before the PNB scam came out. By the time it surfaced, he had had the citizenship of Antigua. In January, 2018, Mehul and his nephew Nirav Modi skipped India.
