Environmentalist and Padma Vibhushan Sunderlal Bahuguna passed away on Friday at AIIMS hospital in Rishikesh, trying to fight the coronavirus.
He was admitted to the hospital on 9th of May when his oxygen levels began to fluctuate. Before being admitted he had been suffering from the symptoms for 10 days.
Sunderlal Bahuguna was an environmentalist and the pioneer of Chipku Movement. Chipku Movement started on 26 March, 1974 In UP where people hugged the trees to save them from being axed. The word “Chipko” means to stick and people literally stuck to the trees by hugging them so that contractors couldn’t cut them.
Later he spearheaded the Anti-Tehri Dam movement which started in 1980s through the early 2004. He even went to jail for this in 1995.
He was given padma Vibhushan in 2009 and refused to accept Novel Peace Prize and Padma Shri Award. Sunderlal Bahuguna was 94 years old when he passed away.
