Mahatma Gandhi’s great-granddaughter has been sentenced for cheating and forgery. 56-year-old Ashish Lata Ramgobin is accused of cheating more than Rs 60 lakh. She has been sentenced to seven years in this case by the Durban Court of South Africa.

It is noteworthy that Lata Ramgobin is the daughter of famous activist Ila Gandhi and late Mewa Ramgobin Lata is accused of fraud with businessman SR Maharaj. She has also been refused permission to appeal the sentence by the Durban Specialized Commercial Crime Court.

Ashish Lata Ramgobin is alleged to have given him about Rs 62 lakh in advance as import and customs duty for a consignment present in India by SR Maharaj. Ashish Lata Ramgobin had also talked about giving a share in that profit to Maharaj.

When the trial of the case against Lata Ramgobin started in 2015, Brigadier Hungwani Muloodji of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) had said that Lata had provided forged invoices and documents to potential investors. With this, she wanted to assure him that three containers of linen were being sent from India.

At that time Lata Ramgobin was released on bail of 50,000 rand i.e. about 2 lakh 70 thousand rupees. During the hearing on Monday, the court was told that Lata Ramgobin had met Maharaj, the director of New Africa Alliance footwear distributors, in August 2015.

Maharaj’s company imports, manufactures and sells clothes, linens and shoes. Maharaj’s company also provides finance to other companies on the basis of profit share. Lata told Maharaj that she had imported three containers of linen from India for the South African hospital group Netcare.

NPA spokeswoman Natasha Kara said during the court hearing that Lata had told Maharaj that since her financial condition was not good, she was facing difficulties in paying the cost of imports and customs duty and that she would have to pay the goods at the port. Money is needed to clear it.

Due to Lata Ramgobin’s family credentials and Netcare documents. Maharaj had entered into a written agreement with her for the loan and paid her 62 lakhs. Lata also told Maharaj with the help of netcare challan and delivery note that the payment has been done.

However, when Maharaj came to know that these documents were forged, he filed a case against Lata in this matter. It is worth mentioning that Lata is the founder and executive director of the NGO ‘International Center for Non Violence’. According to Lata, he is an activist and he is especially active on environmental, social and political matters.
