Canada had announced a ban on flights coming from India on April 22 which was supposed to be for 30 days and end on May 22, 2021. However, on Saturday, instead of lifting it, they have announced that it is extended till June 21, 2020.

Canada’s Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said that these restrictions have been put to reduce the spread of Covid-19 and its variants. He also mentioned that Canada had seen a significant reduction in the cases of coronavirus among arriving airlines since they have banned India flights because cases were increasing rapidly there.

“These ongoing measures will remain in place to help protect Canadians and to manage the elevated risk of imported cases of Covid-19 and variants of concern,” he told a briefing.

For more than a year now Canadian border has been closed and because of that non-essential travel has been on hold. Before this announcement, Air Canada had already extended their ban on direct flights coming from India last week.

Canada has seen a drop of 25% in new cases since last weeks as the vaccinations pick up across Canada. The cases average around 5,000 now said Chief Public Health Officer Howard Njoo.
