Black Fungus Infection: An infection called mucormycosis is being detected in Covid-19 patients in some states. It affects the lungs and the brain of the patient and begins to manifest in the skin.
Mucormycosis, commonly called black fungus, is very rare infection but it is a serious one. It is caused by a fungus called mucormycete, which is present in abundance in the environment. It mostly affects people with health conditions and weak immune system.
The symptoms of this disease include pain and redness around eyes or nose, or both. Other symptoms are fever, cough, breath shortness, bloody vomit, headache etc.
As we discussed already, it is a rare infection and only those people are vulnerable to it who have a medical condition such as diabetes, cancer etc. because their body’s capability to fight sickness is usually very low.
Prevention
Experts suggest that those who visit dusty construction sites must wear masks, shoes, long trousers, full-sleeve shirts and even gloves if handling soil. Maintaining a personal hygiene can help prevent this disease.
Treatment
It is treated with antifungals but the need of a surgery may arise eventually. To help your body fight it, doctors suggest that one must keep their diabetes under control, steroid usage to minimum and immunomodulating drugs discontinued.
Although the cases are not much and there has not been a major outbreak of this fungal infection yet precaution should be taken. In some states, these cases have been seen so far. With those people who are either having or have recovered from Covid-19.
